The Ministry of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection, is in the first quarter of 2020, expected to host a Forum that will bring together, the 11 commercial water utilities and private companies in the water sector.
Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Permanent Secretary, Mabvuto Sakala says the meeting is aimed at facilitating a win – win agreement between the private sector and the commercial water utilities who are the service providers.
Mr Sakala says the private sector is key in financing investments in water supply and Sanitation, through Public – Private Partnerships – PPP’s.
He has challenged managements of Commercial Utilities – CU’s to think beyond the treasury and partner with the private sector to solve challenges such as Non Revenue Water – NRW, which all CU’s are grappling with.
The Permanent Secretary says investors are willing to partner with the Ministry through water utilities because of the guarantee of returns in investing in water supply and Sanitation.
He says Private-sector technology and innovation is critical in helping commercial utilities provide better public services through improved operational efficiency.
Mr. Sakala says with a fast growing population and rapid urbanization, there is need, more than ever to invest in water supply and Sanitation infrastructure.
Mr. Sakala who is on a familiarization tour of commercial water utilities across the country said this when he addressed Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company management in Kitwe.
